Texas Deep Freeze
Feb. 21st, 2021 03:36 amI'm just finishing up what has got to be one of the worst weeks I have endured in my life.
I live in Texas and therefore had to endure the Deep Freeze that started on the night of Valentine's Day. It was fine at first. I was excited to watch the snow fall. It rarely ever does. But then it kept coming. It snowed all night and into the next day. Temperature was low and worse, the power was off.
My house isn't insulated well. It was built in 1930 and doesn't have proper heating or cooling. We just use AC units in the windows for summer and small electric heaters in winter. Without electricity I had no heat in my bedroom. We only have one gas heater. I spent a few nights on a mattress on the floor huddled next to that heater next to the family dog.
Our pipes didn't completely freeze, luckily. We were able to get some water, but we were warned to boil any water for drinking. Any food we looked for in stores was mostly gone, but we had a good supply of some basics and the stove was gas! We were very fortunate in that.
So we basically went most of the week in freezing temps without power. No mail was being delivered, food delivery was mostly impossible. Most businesses closed, even places that were usually open 24/7.
People died from the cold. We were very fortunate, however. It is finally starting to warm up. There's no ice or snow. We have electricity. There's still some food shortages and we can't drink tap water, but it's so much better than freezing in the dark.
